Right now I’m joining the mile high club… for writing blog posts.

That’s right, I’m in Denver, CO! The trip started as a result of Chaplin’s The Kid playing alongside his The Idle Class at the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. Courtney and I have a mutual friend, Laura, who just moved out to Denver a few months ago, sealing the deal. While the trip was mostly contrived as an excuse to visit another city and see a film that is rarely performed, it seems rather obligatory for one to partake in some sort of a snow activity while in Colorado. Courtney and I aren’t skiers. Not by a long shot. So snowshoeing seemed to be an apt replacement, given that the only prerequisite was an ability to move the left foot in front of the right.

For my fellow Midwesterners who have probably never heard of snowshoeing (me a week ago), snowshoeing is essentially hiking up a mountain that happens to have snow on it. My definition hardly does the activity justice, because it was freaking awesome.

As a Midwesterner, the natural beauty that usually surrounds me is trees, endless corn field and more trees. Therefore, mountains make me quite giddy. Incidentally, mountains also make me light headed, because as it turns out, my body isn’t used to be over a mile above sea level.

Our snowshoeing adventure consisted of taking about 5 steps up the mountain, then stopping to regain our composure. Not helping was the fact that we were out until about 2-3am drinking the night before. Adam, Laura’s boyfriend, and I actually felt fine, but the same can’t be said for Laura and Courtney. One too many vodka mixed drinks, methinks.

Their constant feeling that their stomachs were about to eject whatever was remaining within was countered by the natural beauty of good ole Mother Earth. After reaching what we declared the top a mere hour or so after our hike began, we sat down on nearby rocks, ate, rested, and enjoyed the fact that civilization was nowhere in sight.

I think it’s safe to say Mother Earth won.
